GREENVILLE, N.C. - City of Greenville officials completed their inspections of most flooded properties on Wednesday, and Mayor Allen Thomas lifted the evacuation order for most areas of the City.

Working in teams of three, the City's inspections team has examined more than 800 locations since the water crested on October 14. Of those structures, eight were identified as having substantial structural damage and requiring significant work before they can be occupied. An additional 37 had water infiltration and minor damage but pose no safety hazard.

The areas of the City that remain under the evacuation order and are not currently accessible include the Greenville Town Common, the Dockside neighborhood, and areas north of River Drive including the Dog Park and Greenway. Residences in these areas will be inspected once the water has cleared and the team can get to them.

The City's inspections team has used a color-coded placard system for notifying returning residents and business owners of their structure's condition. A green placard indicates that the location is structurally sound, but there are steps owners should take to ensure no future issues. Yellow placards (37) were placed on structures in which the water infiltrated, but there was only minor damage and no safety hazards are present. Building permits may be required for some of the work on these structures. Red placards (8) were necessary for structures that had more than 12 inches of water in them, and the water caused substantial damage. Owners of these locations will need to obtain building permits, repair damages, treat the damaged areas and do some additional testing before they can be inhabited.
