Patrol Officers in the Greenville Police Department will each have a body-worn video camera soon.  The City Council approved the purchase of 80 new cameras at the November 10, 2014 meeting.

"We see the body-worn cameras as an opportunity and a good idea to promote and increase police legitimacy in our city,”Body Camera said Police Chief Hassan Aden. “This technology has already served to increase public trust within the communities we serve.  Having the ability to review encounters between the police and citizens is priceless, especially when the Police Department is focused on the continuous improvement of our policies and practices, as well as our relationship with the community.”

The Police Department has been using body cameras since January of 2013 and currently has 23 of the cameras in use by officers. The new cameras will be purchased using seized asset funds. An additional 10 cameras will then be purchased using a Federal grant to ensure that all patrol officers have a body camera. Technology is already in place so that the video will be fed to and saved on City-owned servers much like the video currently fed from dashboard cameras in use by the Department.
