Interested in Becoming a Lifeguard?

If you are already a certified lifeguard please fill out an application via the Career Opportunities portal at the top of this page.

To become certified you need to take an American Red Cross Lifeguarding course. The purpose of the course is to provide entry-level lifeguard participants with the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize, and respond to the aquatic emergencies and to provide care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries and sudden illnesses until emergency medical services personnel take over. To enroll in the you must be at least 15 years old before the last scheduled class session. Proof of age is required at pre-requisite skills evaluation.

To participate in the course, you must be able to pass pre-requisite skills evaluation that includes the following:

  1. Swim 300 yards continuously demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing. You may swim using the front crawl, breaststroke, or a combination of both but swimming on the back or side is not allowed. Swim goggles may be used.
  2. Tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs.
  3. Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds. Retrieve a 10 pound object and swim 20 yards back to starting point with both hands holding object and existing water. Goggles may not be used.

The course fee of $150.00, with a $50.00 non-refundable deposit. The course fee covers a CPR pocket mask and American Red Cross certification fees upon successful completion.

The course takes approximately 28 hours to complete, however more time may be required. Classes will be held at the Greenville Aquatic & Fitness Center except for a deep water session at an alternate location TBD.
