Keep Greenville Beautiful Enters Partnership

This fall, Greenville residents will be asked to “Recycle More” through a campaign launched with the help of the Curbside Value Partnership (CVP).
A program of national nonprofit Keep America Beautiful (KAB), CVP is partnering with the City of Greenville and KAB affiliate Keep Greenville Beautiful as well as the North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources’ Division of Pollution Prevention and Environmental Assistance (DPPEA). CVP is working with Greenville to develop a localized campaign to promote the ease of recycling in the city and to keep recycling at the top of residents’ minds. The campaign developed will become part of DPPEA’s upcoming statewide Recycle More N.C. campaign, designed to remind residents to recycle.
Greenville Recycling Coordinator Cheryl Tafoya said, “We see this partnership as an effective way to increase recycling as well as our diversion rate within the City of Greenville with minimal impact to our citizens.”
While the campaign will be tailored for Greenville, campaign outreach materials and other creative concepts will be made available by DPPEA for other interested North Carolina communities to customize.
“There are many reasons we’re excited about this partnership,” said Steve Thompson, program director for CVP. “For years, CVP has been impressed with the education campaigns developed by DPPEA.  The new Greenville partnership engages both the city and Keep Greenville Beautiful in promoting the local curbside recycling program. As a result, we expect greater participation by residents and an increase in curbside collection rates.”
“Every 3.9 seconds North Carolinians throw away enough plastic bottles to reach the height of the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse. With the plastic bottle landfill disposal ban now in place, we need to educate and remind people to recycle as much as possible to help us create jobs and grow our economy,” said Scott Mouw, state recycling coordinator, DPPEA. “This partnership with CVP will allow us to provide additional education tools to communities throughout the state, making it a cost-effective relationship for us.”
The campaign is expected to be officially launched in conjunction with America Recycles Day, which is celebrated on November 15th. “We’re excited to be a part of something bigger than just Greenville,” said Wes Anderson, Director of Public Works for the City of Greenville. “By combining forces with the state we hope to not only see an increase in recycling, but also an increase in understanding of just how important recycling is for North Carolina.”
ABOUT THE CURBSIDE VALUE PARTNERSHIP
The Curbside Value Partnership (CVP), a program of Keep America Beautiful, Inc., is designed to grow participation in curbside recycling programs nationwide. CVP was officially unveiled to communities in 2005 and is the only current national program that engages all recycling stakeholders (including communities, private industry, haulers and materials recovery facilities) to identify solutions to improving curbside recycling programs through education.
CVP’s goal is to launch and study education programs to increase participation in local curbside programs, and make programs more profitable and sustainable. 23 communities and three states have been engaged by CVP in education campaigns, including the states of Georgia, Minnesota and Pennsylvania, as well as Arlington County, Va.; Baton Rouge, La.; Brevard County, Fla.; Burlington County, N.J.; Denver, Colo.; Kansas City, Mo.; Indian River, Fla.; Lancaster and York Counties in Penn.; Mecklenburg County, N.C.; McLeod and St. Louis Counties in Minn.; Omaha, Neb.; Orlando, Fla. and Savannah, Ga. CVP is currently funded by members of the Aluminum Association and Can Manufacturers Institute with support from other industries and organizations planned in 2010. For more information, visit
