Fair Housing Month Observance

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) designates April as National Fair Housing month.  April 2022 marks the Fiftieth-Fourth Anniversary of the Federal Fair Housing Act of 1968 and the Thirty-Eighth Anniversary of the State Fair Housing Act, both providing for equal housing opportunity.   The Fair Housing Act was signed into law by President Lyndon B. Johnson on April 11, 1968.

Fair housing is the right to choose housing free from unlawful discrimination.  Federal and state fair housing laws protect people from discrimination in housing transactions such as rentals, sales, lending, and insurance regardless of regardless of race, color, religion, sex, national origin, and disability or familial status.

Why Does It Matter?  Housing is much more than shelter from the elements.  Access to the services, resources, and opportunities that directly impact quality of life are dependent upon where one lives.   Decent, safe, affordable housing is everyone’s goal, but it’s often barred to people who are mentally or physically challenged, elderly and low-income citizens and the homeless.

The City of Greenville, the Greenville Human Relations Council, the Greenville Area Property Managers Association will sponsor the following seminars in observance of Fair Housing Month:
