Greenville Fire/Rescue takes great pride in serving our many customer bases. At times, we serve the community through education, simply lending a helping hand or through the enforcement of codes. One service we are extremely proud to provide is our emergency response services for both fire and medical emergencies.

Our goal is to help people through what is often one of the worst days of their lives. We are made up of 161 proud men and women spread across three individual work shifts, each working a 24-hour shift. Each shift is made up of 44 professionals who stand ready to serve you, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. We have the support of 14 support staff positions that assist. We serve the community through seven neighborhood-based fire/rescue stations. Being spread out through the city allows us to maintain a response time on average of seven minutes.

Greenville Fire/Rescue is proud to be an internationally accredited department through the Center for Public Safety Excellence and the Commission on Fire Accreditation International. This accreditation shows that GFR is in accordance with top performing departments across the nation and world. The department's insurance rating was updated in early 2020 by the North Carolina Department of Insurance  (NC DOI). The department's rating improved from a Class 3 to a very high Class 2 rating. These ratings show how well-protected the community is by their fire/rescue department. Higher ratings suggest that the department is overall better equipped to respond to fires in the community.

Our personnel train almost on a daily basis in order to maintain current skills and to acquire new ones. Much of the training is provided locally and includes a mix of both hands-on type training and academic classroom training. We work with the North Carolina Department of Insurance Fire and Rescue Division, North Carolina Office of Emergency Medical Services, the North Carolina Division of Emergency Management and the National Emergency Training Center to provide much of our more advanced training. While the amount of training for each individual is significant, we believe that no amount of training can take the place of good service.

We take a great deal of pride in our service commitments and operate under the premise that "people will only care about how much you know, when they know about how much you care." We have a four-story drill tower that contains facilities to conduct live fire training evolutions using liquid propane gas. The complex may be used by many of our surrounding departments to help them maintain their skills.

Greenville Fire/Rescue is the proud home to North Carolina Urban Search and Rescue Task Force #10. This team is funded by the state, and has 51 team members from Greenville Fire/Rescue. The team has a large amount of equipment and expertise in specialized areas, such as building collapse and other technical rescue incidents. The team stands ready to be deployed at a moment's notice to assist anyplace within the state.
