The City of Greenville and Keep Greenville Beautiful have been proud participants in the Adopt-a-City Street program since 1989. Neighborhoods, businesses, families, and individuals can make a difference in the community by adopting a City street through this litter-removal program. For more information about the program, or to participate, send an email to program coordinator Jordan Anders at janders@greenvillenc.gov, or call 252-329-4821.

How to Adopt

To adopt a City street, your group or business agrees to pick up litter for three years along a mile of roadway within the City of Greenville on a quarterly basis. The City of Greenville reserves the right to refuse any group adopting a section of street when the adoption may create a safety hazard for City employees or the public, jeopardize the Adopt-a-Street program, or prove counter-productive to its purpose.

To see which streets are available to be adopted, view the City's interactive Adopt-A-Street map here

What the City Provides

The City of Greenville maintains/provides a list of potential streets for adoption which can be supplemented by the Community Appearance Commission and adopting organizations. When your group adopts a street, the City will do the following:

  • Post a road sign with your group's name to mark your adopted section of street, if your organization adopts the street for a minimum of three years. The sign will be installed after your organization's second cleaning.
  • Provide safety vests (which you are required to wear).
  • Provide trash and recycle bags.
  • Collect and dispose of filled trash bags when notified by your coordinator of the date and place.
  • Present certificates of appreciation to your organization at the end of three years.

Your Responsibilities

  • Pick up litter along your adopted roadway at least once per calendar quarter. You are encouraged to clean your street more often if needed. It is the City's hope that two of your cleanup days will take place in April and September during special cleanup campaigns.
  • Make sure everyone in your organization has a clear understanding of the program and follows the safety procedures.
  • Choose an Adopt-a-Street coordinator who is at least 21 years old.
  • Youth groups must have parental permission. For safety reasons, no one under the age of 12 is allowed to participate in the program. Young children must not accompany those participating in the program.
  • Whenever possible, recycle collected litter.
  • You are encouraged to obtain media coverage during your cleanup times.
  • Coordinate cleanup dates and times with the City of Greenville Public Works Department. Your first cleanup should be within three months of adoption.
  • Clean up areas quarterly (four times per year).
  • Maintain a current liability release form for each participant.

Safety Precautions

Before collecting litter for the first time, all volunteers must receive adequate safety training. The City has established the following rules to help ensure the safety of everyone participating in the Adopt-a-Street program.

  • Wear your safety vest.
  • Face oncoming traffic.
  • Maintain a working group of 6-10 people.
  • Avoid work during hours and days that are peak travel times.
  • Stop work in inclement weather.
  • Avoid overexertion.
  • Be alert for snakes.
  • Avoid contact with noxious weeds and areas where herbicides have been applied.
  • Do not pick up items on bridges, in tunnels, or on overpasses.
  • Stay clear of any construction.
  • Use extra caution near the edge of curbing and intersections.
  • Other safety tips include wearing light-colored clothing, heavy gloves, leather shoes, or boots as well as a hat and long sleeves.

Adopt-A-Street Publicity Acknowledgement

The City of Greenville wants to thank you for taking part in the Adopt-A-Street program and we'd love to do so publicly!

When your group completes a litter pickup, we kindly ask that you snap a group photo (nothing fancy — a cell phone photo will do just fine) and email it to Jordan Anders at janders@greenvillenc.gov, so that we can give you a shoutout on Facebook and Twitter!

By doing so, you would be agreeing for that photo to be posted to the City of Greenville's social media accounts, as well as to potentially be used in promotional materials for the Adopt-A-Street program, such as flyers or social media graphics.

This is by no means mandatory, but we would love to be able to publicly acknowledge your group's contribution to helping keep our community looking cleaner.

Sign Policy

Part of showing your organization's commitment to the community is the placement of a sign bearing its name along your selected stretch of street. Groups that are new to the program are eligible to have a sign placed after your organization has completed two (2) quarterly litter pickups.

By electronically signing your name below, you acknowledge the information above.
