Construction of the next leg of Greenville’s greenway system is almost set to begin now that City Council has approved additional funds for the project. The Council approved an additional $61,978 of Powell Bill funds at the Monday, November 10, 2014 meeting.

The City and North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) have extended their agreement to build the 10-feetGreenway Phase 2 wide path, the Green Mill Run Greenway Phase 2 Extension Project as it is known, adding an additional $309,890 in funds with the other $247,912 coming from NCDOT. This extension will run along Greens Mill Run from the end of the current greenway (on Charles Boulevard near Ficklen Drive) to Evans Street, then along Arlington Boulevard to Evans Park and River Birch Tennis Center.

Continued construction of the greenway system is part of the City Council’s goals of a dynamic and inviting community. Phase 3 Extension (from the Town Common through West Greenville) is also in the works.

Bids for the project are due in December of 2014 with construction scheduled to begin in the Spring. This section of greenway is expected to be completed by July of 2016.
