City Secures Funding for Transportation Activity Center

Post Date:04/23/2014

Construction of the Greenville Transportation Activity Center (GTAC) is one step closer as the City of Greenville has secured funding for the planned facility.  The GTAC will provide a modern, clean, and safe transfer point between buses and other forms of transportation as well as a hub of activity and redevelopment in the Dickinson Avenue area near downtown.

“The City is extremely pleased to receive full funding for this project,” said Public Works Director Kevin Mulligan.  “This has truly been a community effort, and we look forward to continuing this partnership as we complete this project.”

The GTAC project has been in the works for several years.  City Council chose the site bounded by South Pitt Street and Bonners Lane in December 2012 and approved an overall budget for the project of $7.9M on September 9, 2013.  Federal grants will pay 80% of the cost of the project while the State and City will pick up 10% each.  Congressman G.K. Butterfield was instrumental in securing the initial earmarks for the project.  City staff has worked with the Federal Transit Administration and the North Carolina Department of Transportation to secure the remaining funds required for the project.

The budgeted amount is based on a conceptual design created from public input and a design team specializing in transportation centers.  The City will move forward shortly with the final design for the facility which will include the site layout and GTAC building as well as improvements to surrounding roads.  The GTAC is anticipated to be completed in late 2016.
