Planting the SEEDs of Success

Post Date:01/18/2013

The City of Greenville is partnering with the Chamber of Commerce to create an environment where small businesses can be grown within the city.

Greenville SEED is a program where entrepreneurs get to share working space, phones, internet access, ideas, and experiences for free. The thought is to bring them together and help them grow their businesses and give them the best opportunity to succeed.

“People come into the SEED from different points,” said Economic Development Planner Niki Jones. “Some have a product, some have plans, others just have an idea. We give them an environment where they can get together, share experiences, and learn from experts and hope it means they will end up with a thriving business to grow here in Greenville.”

Organizers have brought in people to help with business plans, figure out what company structure is right for the business, what accounting method to use, and how to get funding. Doing this in an environment where the entrepreneurs are not getting charged for these services helps mitigate their risks and gives them a real chance to succeed.

One of the SEED program’s first success stories, Sam & Mike’s Munchies, was recently featured in the local newspaper. Part of the first group of entrepreneurs to utilize the SEED offices and programs, they are a local manufacturer of healthy, tasty foods - from snacks to entrees to desserts. Through the program, they have been able to work on their business plan, secure an agreement to utilize a local food service kitchen, and begin selling their products.

Greenville SEED is looking for another group of entrepreneurs who are seeking a place to help cultivate their business idea at no cost. The application deadline for the next opening at SEED is February 1, 2013. Applications can be found online at www.greenvilleseed.com.
