GREENVILLE, N.C. - River Park North has earned the highest levels of certification as a Green Travel Destination, the North Carolina Department of Environmental Equality announced recently. It is the first city park in the state to receive the designation.

River Park North and the Walter L. Stasavich Science and Nature Center are now North Carolina Green Travel Certified in the areas of parks, attractions, and nature-based businesses. With the certification, River Park North hopes to reduce operation costs, protect the environment and extend its brand to a growing "green" consumer market. Programs such as Composting 101, its native wildlife landscaping around the park, and policies such as "take only pictures, leave only footprints" helped River Park North earn the certifications.

"Certification in the Green Travel Program isn't the culmination of our commitment to conservation, it is a waypoint that ensures we are on the right path," River Park North Coordinator Christopher Horrigan said. "The certification process provided insight into how we can continue to improve our environmental footprint while fostering stewardship in the community."

North Carolina's Green Travel Recognition Program is the most extensive in the nation, encompassing lodging, food service, attractions, museums, parks, vacation rentals, convention centers, festivals and other travel-oriented businesses. The initiative is a free program to help promote robust economic growth and environmental stewardship in the travel and hospitality sector through the recognition of "green" travel-oriented businesses. Other certified businesses in Greenville include the Uptown Umbrella Market, Greenville-Pitt Convention and Visitors Bureau, and The Music House B&B.
