What cases are considered Major Crimes cases?

All homicides, suspicious deaths, armed / violent robberies, violent crimes against a person (not of a sexual nature).

How long should I wait before inquiring about my case after the initial report?

If the case is assigned to a detective, it is normally 3 days from the time it is assigned that the detective will attempt to contact you. Given time for the approval and assignment processes, a good rule of thumb would be to inquire after approximately 1 week from the time you reported it if you haven’t heard anything. Not all cases are assigned to a detective, so upon inquiring, we can tell you who to speak with.

How do I go about getting a decedent’s property that is in the possession of the Police Department?

You will either talk with the initial officer that took the report or you will be referred to the detective if the case was assigned to one. They can walk you through the process of what can or cannot be released and why. Generally, you will also have to provide proof of next of kin status.

How do I get a copy of an autopsy?

You can get a copy from the NC Medical Examiner’s Office. You can request this via an online portal at:

N.C. Office of the Chief Medical Examiner (OCME) (nc.gov)

***On the left hand side of the page is a vertical listing of options; choose “Document Request.”

How do I find out the next court date for the defendant in my case?

You can find this information on the Administrative Office of the Courts website at:

Court Dates | North Carolina Judicial Branch (nccourts.gov)

Does the Police Department have a victim’s advocate?

Yes, we have two. They can be reached by contacting your detective if one is assigned or by calling 252-329-4182 or 252-329-4184.

Which Assistant District Attorney (Prosecutor) is assigned to my case and how would I make contact with them?

It is the elected District Attorney that assigns a prosecutor to each individual case so all inquiries about that would need to be directed to their office.

Their phone number is 252-695-7100 and their office is located at:

Pitt County Courthouse

100 W. 3rd Street
PO Box 8185
Greenville, NC 27858

Will I be notified before the suspect in my case is released?

North Carolina has an offender notification program through the Department of Corrections. 124 New Hope Road

Greenville, NC 27834

Their phone number is 252-902-2850.

Who do I talk to about Victim’s Compensation?

You would need to talk with your detective if the case was assigned to one. If not, you can reach out to one of our Victim Advocates at 252-329-4182 or 252-329-4184.

Who do I need to talk to if my assigned detective will not return my phone calls or inquiries?

You can call and request to speak to the Major Crimes Sergeant for assistance. This Sergeant is in charge of the detectives in the Major Crimes Unit and can assist you with issues in your case.
