Greenville Partners With NCDOT For Pedestrian Safety

People trying to cross 15 intersections in Greenville will be able to do so more safely thanks to an agreement between the City and the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT). The City Council approved the agreement at its August 11, 2014 meeting.

“Pedestrian safety has been a key concern for the City Council and is the topic of some of their strategic goals,” said PedHeadEngineer Tim Corley. “The City and NCDOT have been working together and looking for opportunities to install these types of improvements at intersections where they are needed most. This partnership will be an opportunity to meet those Council goals and provide much-needed improvements.”

As part of the agreement, the City will upgrade the intersections with new pedestrian heads (with countdowns), buttons to activate the walk signals, and crosswalks. Areas which require wheelchair ramps or need to upgrade existing wheelchair ramps to meet the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) will get those improvements as well. NCDOT will provide $750,000 from Federal and State funds to pay for the upgrades.

City and State engineers worked together to identify the intersections most in need of these safety measures. Design work is scheduled to begin immediately. Construction is expected to begin in the Spring of 2015.
