Mayor Refines Evacuation and Curfew Orders

Post Date:10/12/2016 5:56 PM
GREENVILLE, N.C. - Greenville Mayor Allen Thomas has refined the exemptions in the orders he issued for evacuations and curfews in the city. The exemptions are included for the altered mandatory evacuation areas, and the curfew that applies to these areas.
Here is an updated map of the mandatory and voluntary evacuation areas. A 24-hour curfew is in place for these mandatory evacuation areas.
As part of this curfew, effective tonight, enforcement actions may take place in mandatory evacuation zones.  This is to ensure the safety of the citizens of Greenville, as well as the safety of emergency personnel. As the Tar River continues to rise, it will become increasingly difficult for travel in the designated evacuation zones. Most residential areas north of the river have already become inaccessible. Officers have noticed a large amount of traffic in the areas south of the river, off First Street, despite this being part of the mandatory evacuation zone. For this reason, anyone wishing to enter a residential evacuation zone in the area off First Street must go through one of four stationary checkpoints. The checkpoints will be set up along 1st Street at the following cross streets until further notice:
  •          Avery Street
  •          Woodlawn Street
  •          Elm Street
  •          Warren Street
The only individuals who will be granted access to residential areas within the evacuation zones are residents, property owners or licensed contractors with a legitimate reason for entry. These individuals will only be allowed in the residential areas during daytime hours, as long as the roads remain passable.

Those wishing to gain access must be able to show proper identification, paperwork, and/or proof of residency. Anyone who is found to be in a residential evacuation zone without the permission of a law enforcement officer is subject to being charged with a class 2 misdemeanor.
