Replacement of the Greenville Town Common bulkhead and the addition of other amenities are coming soon after the City Council approved a project that will enhance flood protection and enrich the park experience for visitors.
The Council unanimously agreed to a $14.337 million construction contract with Trader Construction, along with contingency funds totaling $3.584 million. An additional $538,554 was approved for construction administration, and the $1.1 million already spent on design brings the total cost of the project to approximately $20 million.
Work will include the replacement of the 57-year-old bulkhead, a structure vital to the park's infrastructure, and the addition of a multi-use path that provides a seamless east-to-west connection through the park. Other improvements include terraced seating, overlooks, a west plaza, a proposed boat dock and gangway, and upgrades to the amphitheater's loading zone.
A $5 million allocation from the State of North Carolina helped make the project possible, with the remaining funds coming from the City's Capital Debt Service Fund and ARPA allocations.
Portions of the Town Common will close in July 2025 for construction to begin. Construction is expected to take approximately 400 days.
